The Young Bermy
Interviews with Kendace Phillips, Kenton Trott, Deanna Weekes

What did students learn about collaborative project work?

What did you learn from working on a collaboration like this?
I learned that some people just won't listen to you no matter how hard you try, so you just have to let them try. And I don't attempt to change them. I just let them go so they can see their own faults and make up for their mistakes.

Do you have any advice for kids who might work on a big project like this together?
Just listen to each others' opinions and try to work as a group and not go individually, and just stay together and don't go separately 'cause then you won't get anything accomplished.

Was it hard that your grade was kind of dependent on what other people were doing?
Yes, 'cause at the beginning that we didn't like the people that we was with, kind of. 'Cause we wanted our friends, or what we call, "Ace Guys," or "Ace Boys," or something.

Really?
Yeah, and then we thought that one person, he would not do any work at all. And so we have to go out, because he just sit there and don't do nothing. But then as we got into it, we all because actually close in this project.

What did you learn about working together with people?
They could end up being your friend, 'cause like I say, I totally got to get closer to these people. 'Cause this is my first year at this school, and I didn't know a lot of people, like Kendace, but during this project I got to know a true side of them, not just what you heard about them.

What was the best part about working with a group of people?
It's that you don't have to do everything by yourself, and that they could help you, 'cause if you're not good at something you could just ask them and they could pick it out real quick. 'Cause sometimes you just get that mental block and they just help you to remember information.

And what was the hardest part about working with people?
Getting them to stay on what they had to do. 'Cause we spent a lot of time on the Internet trying to get pictures and backgrounds and all that. It is really hard to keep them all focussed, sometimes they would go on other sites on the Internet, then you'd have to get them back on focus.

What was the best part about working with a team?
It was nice; I got to have other people's opinion, and how, on my work, and also to help them with their work. And it was very interesting what they have to say about what they thought up and other people talked to me.

And what was the hardest part about working together?
Finding information, and finding pictures that would go with that information.
